Positive ageing and older workers
Older workers are becoming more important as part of an overall employment strategy in the face of an ageing population. The government is working to counter age stereotypes and discriminatory practices in employment, and help older workers remain in or return to the workforce.
In 2005, the Office of Senior Victorians funded the
Victorian Employers' Chamber of Commerce and Industry to undertake the Positive Ageing Workforce Education Project over two years. The project aimed to raise employer awareness about workforce ageing and strategies to avoid skills shortages by recruiting, retaining and retraining older workers.The project produced the
Grey Matters kit which presents facts, examines stereotypes and dispels myths about employing older workers. It also contains a self audit tool to help small business analyse their recruitment and retention practices.An inaugural Grey Matters Age-Aware Employer Champion Award was presented in November 2006.
