The media and Positive Ageing

The media is one of the biggest influences on how we perceive ageing and older people as a society. Older people have long felt misrepresented by the images they see of older people on film, screen and stage.

The Images of Age grants program is an important vehicle for promoting change in community attitudes towards ageing and older people. In 2007-08, grants of up to $20,000 are being offered to Neighbourhood Houses for partnership projects that bring older people, artists and the community together to promote positive attitudes to ageing.

As well as the Images of Age Grants program, the Office of Senior Victorians has been associated with three exciting sponsorship opportunities with the St Kilda Film Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival and the Australian Teachers of Media Awards in 2006.

Sponsorships of key industry organisations and awards are another way to raise awareness about the positive aspects of ageing among a new and younger audience.

In 2007, the Office of Senior Victorians was pleased to be associated and continue sponsorship arrangements with the St Kilda Film Festival and the ATOM Awards.

Since 2003 the Office of Senior Victorians has sponsored the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Award in the category of Positive Images of the Older Person.
